My History

My name is Scott Ramsey. I’m 31 years old and I am a professional photographer. I am happily married to Kirsty and we have two sons, Joshua and Max.
My journey as a photographer began as a child when I would listen to my Dad’s stories about his exploits as a news photographer working in Wales. For me, his memories of the Aberfan disaster in 1960 were my first inspiration. Dad covered the event right from the beginning while working for Hill’s Welsh Press, and had seen many terrible things.
On about the fourth day at the scene of the disaster, everyone was moved from one of the school playing fields and told to keep back. A helicopter appeared on the horizon and headed towards the playing field, “A rare thing in those days.” he told me. The helicopter touched down and out stepped a photographer loaded down with cameras looking like he had just arrived from a war zone!

He turned out to be from Life, the greatest ‘picture’ magazine ever published. Life was an American glossy that published picture stories from all over the world. Proper pictures, real pictures, pictures that make you think.  Like all good things, Life has come to an end and is not published any more but that story has always stuck with me. So you could say it’s all the Old Man’s fault I have ended up in this profession!
The next leg of my journey took me to the Daily Mirror, courtesy of then picture editor Len Greener. He invited me for work experience and during that week a picture I had taken of Anthea Turner was published. I was 13 years old.
I left school at 16 and joined the West Sussex Gazette in Arundel working alongside the picture editor, Bill Shimmin. Later I moved onto become a freelance photographer in Sussex, working for national and local newspapers alike.
In 1997 I was offered a staff job on the South Wales Echo in Cardiff. I spent four years at the paper working with some great guys Malcolm, Peter, Paul and of course grumpy Ag! In 1999 I received a Highly Commended certificate in the Guinness Young Photographer of the year section of the Picture Editors Awards and also in the BT Welsh News Photographer of the Year.
My family and I moved back to Sussex when I became the Chief Photographer at Ferrari Press Agency. I spent a hectic year and half covering assignments in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Essex, London, France and Belgium for the national newspapers.
Now I am a freelance photographer, available for news, public relations, corporate, weddings, lifestyle shoots and events in the UK. Where will the journey go from here? Keep an eye on this website and I’ll let you know.
