The South Korea Odyssey: A Nation in Transition
A Documentary Storytelling Project
A Photojournalist’s Journey Through South Korea
In 2022, I embarked on a month-long, 1,000km+ independent expedition through South Korea—my first deep dive into Asia. Using my 38 years of photojournalistic craft as a passport, I wanted to get off the sofa and look past the gloss of global trends. From the hyper-modern pulse of Seoul to the coastal heritage of Busan, this series is an active, immersive journey. It documents a nation at a historic crossroads through the real, raw human stories of the people keeping ancient spirit alive in the shadow of rapid progress.
Beneath a sea of neon lies the whisper of an ancient soul.
Spanning a month-long, 1,000-kilometre trajectory, this assignment marks a deep immersion into a nation navigating a massive transition. Moving far beyond the familiar, bright-light tourism of the capital, the expedition cuts straight through the high-octane pace of a global economic powerhouse to find the real, human core of its modern survival.
Modern South Korea is a fascinating study in unexpected juxtapositions. On this assignment, my lens moves from documenting cutting-edge ecological enterprises operating on the skyscrapers of Seoul to capturing master painters and traditional paper makers fighting to keep centuries-old heritage alive in hidden provincial alleys. It is an exploration of cultural identity—documenting how a country fiercely protects its ancient spirit while simultaneously sprinting into the future.

The journey culminates in a rare, intimate meeting with world-renowned Netflix street food legend, Cho Yon-soon.

Visual Storytelling Across South Korea
"Stepping onto the streets of Seoul, you’re instantly hit by a hyper-modern wall of neon and glass. But as a photojournalist, my instinct is always to look past the gloss. Travelling over a thousand kilometres through this country, I wanted to capture the grit, the sweat, and the quiet dignity of the people keeping South Korea's ancient soul alive in the shadow of rapid progress." — Scott Ramsey, Project Storyteller
