Soi Fah: Laughter Born from Resilience
Her life began in the darkest shadows of the Thai-Myanmar border—saved as an infant from an attempted drowning by Catherine Riley-Bryan (“Momo Cat”), a Kiwi who arrived in the jungle years ago with a single mission: to protect vulnerable children caught in the crossfire of civil war. Carving a clearing out of the bush, Catherine built a simple bamboo structure that would eventually grow into the life-saving sanctuary known today as the Bamboo School.
Soi Fah should have been defined by what was taken from her. Born blind and bearing the weight of a horrific start to life, she instead chose an unapologetic, infectious joy.
Captured in 2025 during one of Scott Ramsey’s many field deployments to document daily life and help share the sanctuary’s story, this photograph reflects the quiet strength of the community. Today, Soi Fah is a thriving teenager whose laughter echoes across the grounds—living fully, loving fiercely, and famously outplaying Scott at kickball by relying entirely on sound, instinct, and an irrepressible competitive spirit.
